The Town Grouch

Wednesday-Dunwell Family Acreage

Nothing too foolhardy or chaotic has happened today, which means that tomorrow will be terrible. That’s how things work around Alderwick. Alderwick is the little town we live by. It’s a small place, about 5 or so minutes’ walk away from our acreage, but I have to admit, Alderwick is just right for our family. Almost as if it were made for us. But enough about Alderwick for now.
Seeing as I have nothing better to do, I’m going to write about Josiah Callahan, who I mentioned in my last entry. I can’t very well just mention him like that, and then ignore him, can I? I’ve got to document things clearly for any unfortunate future historians who might read this.
So, as I said, his name is Josiah Callahan, but no one calls him that. We all call him Joe, which fits his grouchy personality perfectly, I think. If you make the mistake of calling him Josiah, he’ll growl at you (well, unless you’re Mrs. Finch, the florist. Nobody growls at Mrs. Finch and comes away unscathed). If you call him Mr. Callahan, he’ll threaten you. And Joe is quite gifted at giving detailed, rather violent-sounding threats (I pray for that man often!), so it’s a good idea to just use your brain, and call him Joe. He’s around 30 years old, though I don’t know for sure, because I never asked him. He owns a repair shop called (be prepared for a blast of creativity!) Joe’s Repair Shop. He repairs vehicles, farm equipment, kitchen appliances, lawnmowers, things like that.
Not surprisingly, our family pays a lot of visits to his shop. But you know what? I don’t think he likes us that much. I’ve heard him muttering about “Those darn Dunwells” more than once. But we pay him, so he tolerates us. He lives in a bright yellow house behind his shop. I sometimes wonder why he doesn’t paint his house a darker color to match his mood, but then again, there’s a rumor around Alderwick that he also secretly grows begonias in a flower pot in his living room. Josiah Callahan planting flowers?! It can’t be true. Well, there you have it. Now you know at least a little bit about our town grouch.
