The word “phron” comes from the Greek term “phronesis”, which means “wisdom”. I need to make it clear that in this case, it’s a certain type of wisdom (and, yes, there are different types. Please don’t faint after reading that, hard as it may be to accept this truth). Phronesis involves using moral and intellectual judgment, as well as prudence, which, I have noticed, are things that quite a lot of people seem to conveniently forget about. Phronesis is the ability to act wisely and morally in any given situation. Sounds boring, right? WRONG! Phronesis is not boring in the least! Do you know why? Because in its most basic form, it means using your brain, and that is quite a feat, given its rarity. No, using your brain is not boring, especially when it’s helping to save your life (like if you’re trying to decide whether or not to jump off a bridge. Using your brain will quickly put an end to such a foolish idea!) or aiding you in getting a job (no employer wants to hire a doofus, unless, perhaps, they are running a circus).
When I was trying to find a name for my blog, I wanted something that conveyed intelligence, because we all know that it will reign supreme. I tried searching for a word that meant “intelligence”, and while I searched, I thought that perhaps it would also be nice to find a word in a different language. After all, I couldn’t exactly call my blog Intelligence or Smart Vibes, could I? How ridiculous would that sound? I needed a word outside of the English language.
Eventually, I found the word “phronesis”. But though I liked what the word meant, I didn’t really want my blog to be called “phronesis”, because I didn’t want people thinking that this is some kind of Greek fan club (spoiler: it isn’t). So, I did the only sensible thing, and shortened it to “phron”, which is not all that hard to remember, and is just a tad easier to pronounce.
And now you know! You know the epic (okay, not actually epic at all, but still interesting) backstory to my blog’s wisdom-filled name! And, bonus; you learned a Greek word (See? You didn’t even notice that little bit of homeschool-powered education sneaking up on you). Celebrate knowledge.💡
