Friday-Dunwell Family Acreage
Eddie’s back. I knew the second he got home, because he flung the door open and yelled, “Honey, I’m hoooooooooooooooooooooooome!” I will never understand him.
A few minutes after his return, I felt strangely claustrophobic (now, can anyone guess why that would be?), so I went outside for a walk.
The sky was blue. The grass was green…well, it was also kind of brownish and dead-looking, you know, because it’s that time of year, but we’re ignoring that. There was a slight breeze that worked to clear the chaos from my brain. All was peaceful…for the most part. I could hear our guinea fowl screaming their lungs out in the distance, but I pretended not to notice them. I continued on my walk. A bright blue dragonfly glided through the air in front of me.
“How nice,” I thought. “How wonderful to have such beautiful, fascinating creatures living here.” As I smiled admiringly at the dragonfly, I saw a white blur out of the corner of my eye. It was my cat, SOAP (his name is an acronym for Scratcher of Annoying Persons. Ingenious, I know). He leaped into the air, opened his jaws wide, and…there was a loud
CRUNCH
Next thing I knew, Mr. Dragonfly was being shredded to bits on the ground. It was not pretty.
“SOAP, why would you do that?!” (yes, I talk to my cat; don’t we all?) “The dragonfly didn’t do anything to you, and you murdered it!”
SOAP glanced up at me, a dragonfly wing stuck to his whiskers. His expression seemed to say, “What is the problem?”
I frowned at him, but what was the use? The deed was done; the dragonfly was no more. I might as well let SOAP enjoy his unusual snack. But my walk was ruined. You can’t really feel very peaceful when you’ve just witnessed your cat maul an innocent dragonfly. I walked back to the house and opened the door.
“ADDIE! YOU’RE BACK!!” Eddie screamed.
I did an about-face and headed back out. I’ll take a mauled dragonfly over Eddie’s chaos any day.
